The kickoff will be held 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at Chetco Brewing Co., 830 Railroad St., Brookings, where people can obtain tickets and learn how they can catch steelhead for use as broodstock. Raffle winners will be drawn 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the brewery. Tickets are $10.
Each ticket gets an entrant an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife authorization permit that allows fishermen to try their luck catching steelhead in the Chetco Chrome Challenge in the Chetco River Jan. 10-22. The goal is to catch 100 steelhead.
The fish will be collected by Oregon South Coast Oregon Fishermen members and transported to the hatchery on the Elk River in North Curry County to be used as broodstock. The smolt will be brought back to the Chetco River at a later date.
Raffle prizes include a charter fishing trip, rod-and-reel combos, fishing tackle and gift certificates from local merchants, among other items.
The Oregon South Coast Fishermen has promoted habitat, hatcheries and harvest of fish since 1975.
